Dance styles
Salsa LA or Salsa Cubana. What is the difference?
Two styles, one music — but a world of difference on the dance floor.
Salsa is Salsa — right? Not quite. Salsa LA and Salsa Cubana are two completely different dance styles, even though they dance to the same music. If you don't know what to look for, they might seem similar. But for a dancer, the differences are huge.
The direction of movement
The most visible difference is the way you move across the dance floor.
Salsa LA is danced on a straight line — dancers move forwards and backwards along an imaginary axis. This gives the dance a tight, structured look that's perfect for spectacular figures and turns.
Salsa Cubana is danced in a circular motion — dancers move around each other. This gives the dance a rounder, more playful and more relaxed character.
The count
Both styles dance on count 1, but the feeling is different. Salsa LA is tighter and more focused on technique and precision. Salsa Cubana feels looser and has more room for improvisation and expression.
The roots
Salsa Cubana is the oldest style — it is the dance that comes directly from the Cuban Son and Casino tradition. The dance grew organically from Cuban street culture.
Salsa LA is a Western interpretation, developed in Los Angeles in the 1990s. Strongly influenced by Hollywood and the show dance world — and you can see it: it's a visually impressive style that's perfect for performances.
Which style is better for beginners?
Neither is easier than the other — they both require technique, timing and practice. It depends on what appeals to you. Do you like tight lines and impressive figures? Then Salsa LA is for you. Are you more of a fan of a relaxed, social dance with Afro-Cuban roots? Then you'll love Salsa Cubana.
At Bailando Latino you learn both styles — so you can make your own choice.
